Still around…

As most of you know, I normally just post recaps and not write about anything else, but since this is my blog, I decided to make an exception and catch up with all of you and let you know what’s going on.

Updated on 11/7 -I put asterisks where I added stuff.

It feels like ages since I’ve posted, but technically it’s only been two weeks since Master’s Sun ended. Thanks for coming over to Soompi and joining me there. It was so good to see familiar names dropping by to say hi and following the drama with me. The first few episodes started out rocky with my one million mini heart attacks during all those ghost scenes, but like I proudly said to Joonni – by the end of episode one, I managed to get a grip on my fear for the most part. I jumped out of my skin a lot less after repeatedly reminding myself this is just normal actors with tons of makeup on. Most nights I was able to trick myself into believing that, but to this day, I still can’t watch some of those ghost scenes at night. Truth be told, just reading about that new drama about a ghost seeing detective scared the crap out of me. No way am I watching that one. Just the other day, I had to watch “The Walking Dead” with a browser partially covering the video box. For some reason, Master’s Sun made me more vulnerable to scary scenes. I was so surprised at myself for being extra jumpy and more scaredy cat than usual. Hope it’s temporary.

My original title for this post was “The year of wind chimes, panda hats, bunkers, and dream catchers,” but it was too long and didn’t fit. Plus everything I wanted to say about the past dramas that I loved so far this year was starting to sound like a year end review and it’s too early for that. I want Heirs to be on that list so I’m going to save what I was going to say for That Winter The Wind Blows, Flower Boy Next Door, Master’s Sun, I Hear Your Voice, Monstar, Heirs, etc for the year end drama wrap up.

Here is a quick run down of the dramas currently airing and those coming up and my take on them:

Mi Rae’s Choice:  Joonni will verify this, but I totally got bummed when I realized I mixed up the male leads for this drama with Golden Rainbow. I kept picturing YEH with Jung Il Woo and fully intended to recap this show, but then Joonni burst my bubble and informed me I had them switched.  Despite all that, believe it or not, I was thinking of recapping this, but time got away from me and I didn’t realize till the day after that I missed the first episode. So I caught up and watched E1 Tuesday evening. I’m sort of reluctant to be so brutally honest since I don’t want to affect anyone’s enjoyment, but I came this close to turning off the video within the first few minutes. OMG that permed hair and those clothes – it’s even worse than in photo stills now that she is actually moving around. YEH was so fashionable in her last drama so is there some kind of warped karma that says she has to suffer hair and wardrobe wise on this one? As if that wasn’t enough, the nail on the coffin was how future Mi Rae traveled back in time. Talk about a letdown. Shows like QIHM, Faith, and Nine spoiled me so I expected more. I didn’t watch Dr. Jin, but at least he fell off a rooftop and traveled through time according to screencaps. That’s way cooler. This one was like watching a really bad B movie -cheesy and low tech doesn’t even begin to describe that scene. Pretty much after that, it was quite a struggle not to throw in the towel and just give up. I hung in there and finished E1, but not that many positive thoughts came to mind. I just don’t like any of these characters. Future Mi Rae is like a bully to her younger self and what she said near the end was not tough love – it was just brutal. Lee Dong Gun looks different from the last time I saw him on Lovers in Paris. Somehow that appeal and charm is gone and all I see is stiff acting. I did notice right away that the actor who was Micky’s cop friend from YEH’s last drama is now playing her older brother. Something like that shouldn’t even be noteworthy, but trying to keep my comments neutral has me grasping at straws right now. Like I keep saying, I must be missing some kind of gene cuz I just don’t like dramas that everyone else loves. With every single drama I loved and wanted to recap, I knew just from the first few minutes if I was in for the long haul or if I was going to bail. For this one, I watched E1 with one foot out the door. Will attempt to watch E2, but all signs point to me not following this drama. *I never did watch E2 so after all these weeks, I’m pretty sure I’m letting this drama go by the wayside.

Your Neighbor’s Wife (Cable drama -JTC): Didn’t last even a minute.

Basketball: Too much intro about the history of basketball in black and white film footage bored me to tears. Even if it was in color, it wouldn’t help cuz I’m not into this sport anyway. *When it finally aired, I was going to read recaps for it at least, but even that proved too much of a chore and I forgot all about it.

Potato Star: downloaded up to E7, but still haven’t started yet. Will update once I’ve seen it. * despite glowing praise and my promise to start, I’m afraid I still haven’t seen a single episode.

Medical Top Team: If I stopped watching The Good Doctor cuz the medical terms were too hard despite the fact the fact that Joowon was on it, then no way will I be disloyal and watch this especially since I happen to hate the lead actor. I have an allergy towards him – he makes my skin crawl. No idea why since I never saw him in any dramas or movies.

Golden Rainbow: Uee and Jung Il Woo are in this so I am definitely watching, but it’s too long of a series to recap. Plus it’s a weekend drama and those are the toughest to keep up with and not miss. When the sun shines and the day beckons, I need to be outside enjoying the sights and sounds of Seoul on the weekends. That means I won’t make it home in time to recap live.  *I checked out E1 and it has every element of kdramas that I despise – it’s too makjang for me to tolerate, but I held on and gritted my teeth to watch E2. Decided to throw in the towel for now and wait for the children’s parts to end and pick it back up around E10 when Uee and JIW come on. Dying to see their onscreen chemistry so makjang overkill or not, I will check it out again then.

A solid promise: For the past few months, I’ve been head over heels in love with one particular show that’s coming up. The drama I will recap for certain without a doubt is My Man From Another Star (new name: You from another star). It starts after Heirs. Even with the crazy premise, something about this drama just screamed “winner” to me. The fact that it stars Kim Soo Hyun is just icing on the cake. One drawback is the second male lead – I never saw him in anything before, but I really hope that idol singer Yunho doesn’t take the role. No offense, but fingers crossed that he bails. * Thank goodness he bailed. Now the potential for this show being great just escalated.

Heirs: Like I said before on Joonni’s recaps, on the nights she is too busy or tired, I will be stepping in to help out and recap. This drama is 20 eps long so we figured between the two of us, we can handle it. After watching it live last week, I didn’t see it again till last night. I found myself fast forwarding all of the scenes in LA except when it was just LMH and PSH. Whenever any Americans came on, I skipped ahead. It was painful enough hearing the bad dialogue once so I didn’t see the need to torment myself a second time. The thing about this drama is that I really love most of it, but I do have issues with the necessity to have so many characters. Couldn’t the story have worked with just half of this cast?  So many of these characters are carbon copies of each other so it gets confusing. Most of those rich girls just vary in their levels of “bit&%ness.” Also, once they go back to Korea, I’m wondering how they are going to explain how they all end up at the same school. If Eun Sang is so poor, how she is able to attend the same high school as Tan and his buddies? One more thing that has me stumped is why LMH chose another high school role.  He hit it big with BOF then moved on to City Hunter and played someone near his real age. He made that character so memorable with all the stunts and fight scenes so that role was a step up. No matter how much he downplays his performance on Faith, he did take his career up another notch by playing such a mature character. How does he justify going from playing a daejang to a high school kid again. So far, it’s so hard to fathom what made him think this role would be considered progress and not a decision that was made for commercial reasons. After Faith, I bet he was counting on Heirs to be a ratings winner. As long as we have this contemplative character who writes and watches sunsets, there are worse things in the world than playing a high school kid again.

Here is my take on the title “He who wears the crown, endure its weight” : It’s probably meant for all the rich kids on this show who are about to inherit their fortune and legacy in a few years and the burden and responsibility that comes with their titles, but it could apply to Eun Sang too. Since she strives to pull herself out of poverty, once she falls in love with one of these rich guys, she has to resign herself to this sort of privileged life and all that it entails. If she ends up with Tan, she will have to weigh all the negative aspects of marrying into this messed up family dynamics just to have the life of leisure she craves. In a way, she will end up a little bit like his mother – feeling isolated and alone at times like someone living in another’s home. Even though it’s Tan, kinda makes you wonder if she would be willing to give up so much of herself and who she was raised to be to put up with his family’s world. Wouldn’t it be like walking into the eye of the storm? Granted she would be holding his hand the whole time, but who is to say he won’t let go of it one day down the line?  Even his father did that three times. (Wow that was depressing – no idea where that came from. It’s like pointing out all the negativity Cinderella must have faced after she walked off into the sunset with her prince charming.) Forget what I said and let’s hope Eun Sang and Tan get their happily ever after. 🙂

As I was reading the soompi thread for this drama, there was a list of certain makeup brands that was used for the press conference. What gets me about all those product listing about which makeup brand was worn or what outfit was featured in a certain scene is the underlying deceit. What they fail to mention is that you need those actors’ faces and bodies to get that same look so if you don’t look anything remotely like them- why bother. During That winter the wind blows, SHK wore this pretty shade of lipstick so I tracked down the same exact color to try it on. Unless you have her luminescent complexion, that shade of orange would make most people look like they are wearing clown makeup. I didn’t even need to put on the lipstick to know that is one color I would never wear in a million years. Lesson learned.

While watching his scenes in GD, I kept thinking this writer is not utilizing Kim Woo Bin’s talent to his full potential so she better not squander this second chance. This is her “do-over” so I really hope this role has depth and substance – more than just as the bad guy and second lead. The best actors can make us love his character despite his despicable persona and if there was a bet going, I would put all my money down on this guy to make that happen.

Some fun news: Joonni and I were at Mango six at Cheongdamdong getting some frozen yogurt when I spotted a really cute guy walk in.  (I have this sixth sense when it comes to cute guys – if they are anywhere nearby, I notice them right away like I have some kind of radar.) He looked so familiar and it was bugging me cuz I knew his face from somewhere. Then it suddenly dawned on me where I had seen him since I must have screencapped his face as much as Joowon’s. Just to confirm, I made Joonni look at him, but she never saw Level 7 so she had no clue who he was. I still have no idea what his name is, but he is the guy who played the bad guy JJ. In real life, he was wearing designer jeans and looked really good like a model. He was with some girl and they got some yogurt to go and left after he went to the bathroom. I don’t really count him as a celebrity sighting of sorts, but it sure was interesting to see someone in real life that I screencapped so much.

Ever since a few months ago, the poster for “Ghost” has been on a certain billboard near Shinsa. Now the posters are on the sides of buses all over Seoul. I have to admit, each time I see one, I felt a pang of guilt. Truth be told, I haven’t watched The Good Doctor in ages. I want to blame my busy schedule recapping Master’s Sun, but honestly it was US shows like Newsroom that distracted me. After the Newsroom finale, then Downton Abbey, The Good Wife, Elementary, and all my other favorite shows started airing again. These days I hardly watch any Kdramas.

About 1N2D: Joonni broke the news to me about Joowon leaving before anyone else posted about it. I can’t say I didn’t see that coming since  his musical schedule requires him to perform so often. Some days I think I loved the first season of 1n2d so much that it carried over to this new one and somewhere along the way, my illusions about it faded. I smiled less with each passing week and then other variety shows like Grandpas over flowers and Dad where are we going took over. It’s still hard to reconcile with the fact that Joowon won’t be on the show anymore. I have been faithfully downloading each episode, but haven’t gotten around to watching any of them. Just for nostalgia’s sake, I think I will watch his last episode though and hope there are still some traces of emotion left for this show.

        Hi Softy,
Glad to hear that your back.. 🙂
Before you went to Soompi, I was spoiled by your blog. Having to get emails directly from your blog made my day’s worth looking forward too. After a long day, I would relax having to read all the comments. Those 2 weeks were a little empty. ;( Then “Heir” started, been getting my regular email again…but by Joonni’s blog. I miss your blog the most 😦
        Email you later…

Hi softy. Thanks for the update :). Occasionally, i wandered back here but nothing new had been posted.

I am still watching k dramas, almost exclusively. It all started with ojakgyo.

This year, the one i love on an emotional level and therefore is the best for me, was monstar. So, i HAD to check out ha yeon soo’s potato star with yeo jin goo. I LOVE it. Love the characters and love the tone of the show. The guy from FBND is there too. Are you watching that? Its a sitcom so only half hour per episode.

Well, sounds like all is well at your end. Wish you all the best for the rest of the year :).

Thanks Enz – those recaps of Master’s Sun took the longest out of all the other dramas I ever translated so there wasn’t much energy left to pick up another drama on the side – hence my long overdue absence on this blog. Sorry about that – will post more often from here on. 🙂

I still haven’t seen a single episode of Potato star, but after watching the video Iviih left me, I think I will check it out soon. 🙂

        hi softy,

i didnt read recaps of master’s sun as i wasnt very invested in the characters. i thought the story development and script was weak but i did love the chemistry of the leads.

i hope you do pick up potato star AND love it too. i just love it to bits. the characters are al little exaggerated but well within folks you could meet in real life. that pompous narcissistic boss who do have some good ideas, the temperamental girl at work, the family man who likes looking at pretty girls and his controlling wife who sniffs out lies easily. ahhh, i love all the characters but esp ha yeon soo, who has been perfectly casted and is a natural in physical comedy.

and yeah, yeo jin gu, well, i have my bail money ready.:)

It’s around 11pm on Sat now and I still haven’t had time to watch Potato Star yet, but I bet I won’t have to worry about YJG cuz even if he was able to grow any semblance of facial hair, he still looks like a baby to me. His laughter totally sounds like a kid too. I caught an interview the 3 of them did together when PS started and he was so cute talking about his first on screen kiss and stuff. He even admitted to looking old for his age (just like LMH said again recently too for a promo interview for Heirs), but I think on this show, it’s cuz the girl from monstar looks super young herself so they look compatible on screen.

    Hi there!

Welcome back. You’ve been missed. 🙂 I’ve subscribed to you for some time, but that was when you took a break. Imagine the surprise when I saw an update from your website. I remember your last post, and I’m guessing that there’s been some other personal things you had to take care of, hence the absence. I sincerely hope that you and the people around you are doing well now. ❤

Anyways, thanks for the update. Hope to see you back recapping and squealing with us over the perfection that is LMH and Park Shin Hye. 😉 I admit. I, too was confused about why LMH would take this role. I'm thinking that maybe he's been struggling a bit after Faith- with trying to stay fresh and young while he can with all the new leading batch of actors coming out. If I remember correctly, he mentioned in an interview that he wanted to do one more drama that was young while he still could. Maybe this will be his last before he goes to the military?

Ha, I don't even want to think about that. How I wish so much that they'd make a S2 City Hunter. Normally, I wouldn't want this for K-dramas given the format- but I really think there's a lot they could work with for a kickass season 2- especially considering how open-ended they left it. How 'bout it? Somebody work on a petition. lol

Anyhow, looking forward to Heirs updates here. It's not amazingballs but LMH and Park Shin Hye makes everything good. The chemistry might not be explosive but there's definitely something strong there. Can't wait to see upcoming banters between them in their relationships- you know it will be fun!

Hi Sweet Pea – I missed you guys too. Actually the only break from recapping has been these past two weeks since Master’s Sun ended so I guess I will be taking a break now if I don’t pick up a new drama soon. I’m waiting to see how good Golden Rainbow will be just to write a first episode impression since I can’t cover such a long series.
Aside from those little short comments I write on Heirs on my other post, I won’t be covering Heirs since Joonni is recapping it on her blog. The only reason I put up that Heirs post was cuz I had so much to say and really wanted to put up all those great sceencaps. I am really starting to fall hard for that drama too. 🙂

Hi Softy..it’s very happy to see your post this morning..i miss you alot!!..
every day i came to your blog to check the new post..i miss your dramas’s recap.
same with you I hardly to watch any k-dramas these days, so i havent watch all k-dramas that you’re talking about above , except of Heirs. i watched the 2 episodes of The heirs..i didnt plan to watch heirs, i wasn’t too excited about this drama at first, cuz it’s too many characters and an endless cast of beautiful faces.i didn’t like that..and the 2 episodes of heirs didnt disappoint me so far. to be honest my spotlights were PSH , LMH and KHN, i didnt care about the other casts yet.I always love PSH, so it’s easy for me to love her character, and LMH , it’s been a long time i watched his dramas since BOF..actually he was my first love in K-dramas…I love Tan & eun sung’s love story..he was interested with her at first sight and eun sung seems knew about that, and didnt play hard to get,,just naturally giving a hint for him ..i love the scene when eunsung at tan’s home in US..she just wake up from a sleep and walked near a pool, Tan just stared at her..the way he looks at her though, like he wants to have his way with her 4ever..I love it..and i think i love this couple already…
Softy, i’m so glad you are back, i’m hoping a good drama recap from you..thank you for this post, i love it..and want to re-read again..

I don’t want to change the theme so I want to renovate and work with this current one. I made a bunch of new headers too – mostly not related to dramas with quotes I love. sometimes I forget to write the name of the blog. 🙂
I’m loving Heirs for the same reasons as you. 🙂 I go over to Joonni’s and watch it live with her as she recaps. I’m always parked there on wed and thurs nights now.

    Hi Softy,
It’s great to see a new post from you. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the new kdramas. I always value your opinion and it’s nice to see different opinions on the various show currently airing.

I’m def. following Heirs at Joonni’s. I must say that I actually liked episode 2 more than the first episode. I completely agree with you that the American “actors” are terrible, cringy-worthy for sure. I’m glad that Jay was no where to be seen. There is something that the show that I like although I can’t really put my finger on it. I’m also enjoying how the main characters are slowly getting to know each other and are seeing parts of their lives (and each other) that they might not normally show. I do agree that the cast is so big and I think it will be difficult to give everyone sufficient screen time. My hope is that as they return to Korea the show will continue to develop the storyline and the characters.

Softy, It’s always great to hear from you. I look forward to seeing other updates. I hope you are well. And I must say you have a great radar 🙂 😉

It has only been 4 eps, but I have a feeling Heirs is just going to get more epic as time goes by.
Isn’t it great that we have Heirs to distract us from missing Master’s Sun. 🙂

Hi Softy! It’s so good to hear from you, and to catch up a bit on what’s going on with you. I’m sorry I’ve been away from your blog for so long. The summer and the beginning of the school year saw me struggling with my health, again (sigh) to the point I had no energy for anything but just getting through the day.

But! I am starting to feel a little bit better, and I just started my own kdrama blog yesterday, so I am (hopefully) back! I’ll be dropping by Cadence too, so I’ll look forward to whatever you decide is your next project.

It’s too bad you didn’t end up liking Mirae’s Choice. I watched the first episode and I really enjoyed it, but I know sometimes a drama just doesn’t work for you, we all have those.I am following Heirs though! I have a lot of the sae reservations you do about it, but so far I’m enjoying it. Let’s see where KES takes us. (First Impressions at my blog, hehe: http://dysfunctionalfairytale.wordpress.com/)

“… I have some kind of radar” hah, Master’s sun reference 🙂 . I found out that you were doing live recaps for master’s sun on soompi, and I’m grateful for that but I haven’t had any time to read it. So since I have break I’m going to of a re-run of Masters sun accompanied with your recaps.

    Hi Softy!
So funny to read that just like me, I have not seen a single kdrama since 2 weeks and Master’s Sun ended. I too have been watching American shows of late. Although the shows we watch are totally different. I am following Criminal Minds, Supernatural and eagerly awaiting Game of Thrones! I also plan on marathoning Elementary. 🙂
I didn’t get to follow your recaps on Mater’s Sun at soompi because although I LOVED the concept of aiding the spirits with unfinished business so they can move on, I really really disliked the lead actress. To the very end I never warmed up to her and her “romance” with So Ji Sub. so sad really because if not for her, this series would have been among my favorite show.
100% AGREE WITH YOU ON LMH’s choice of role in Heirs. So not only am I disappointed with him now, I kinda lost respect for him as well.
But as always, regardless of my participation, I do applaud you and Joonni for doing such a HUGE SERVICE TO US NON KOREANS by providing super fast and accurate recaps of shows. You ladies DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANY OF THESE! BUT YOU DO SINCE YOU BOTH ARE SUCH AWESOME GALS! 🙂
So looking forward to our movie date for “The King’s Wrath”! 🙂

We do like the same shows though cuz I love Game of thrones and Elementary. I read all the GOT books like twice now. Dying for the next one, but lord knows when he will finish writing it. Pretty sure the series will catch up to his books if he keeps taking so long.

I actually had the opposite problem – I loved the lead actress but never liked So Ji Sub. it’s only cuz of MS that I even learned to spell his name correctly.

Even though Joonni is the only one translating Heirs, I stay up with her for moral support. I also nag her to hurry and finish and go to sleep. Also I supply her with new headers from her favorite screencaps.

Me too – can’t wait to see King’s Wrath – Hyun Bin here we come. 🙂

  10. Hi Softy,

My first time leaving a message here. I am envious now. Last time we were at the same Mango Six, there were no celebrity sightings. But I was happy. We were the only cute ones there that day.

And, I’ll try on that shade and see what happens, just for fun. Clown face or no clown face.

    Keep well, dear friend.

      • Softy… so … there’s a MangoSix every two blocks? Ignorant of me. But the one we’re at was where ‘A Gentlemen’s Dignity’ was filmed, right? (My mom loves that show.) Anyways, that Cheongdam MangoSix will always be the one where I was with Softy and Joonni. It’s OUR MangoSix.

I love your writing, Softy. Keep going. I will keep up with your updates until we meet again. Meanwhile, the next best thing is making dreamcatchers while watching The Heirs.

        Until then, keep well.

Helloo Softy!!!!! Yay I’m glad you posted! I missed you and missed this blog.

It is so nice for you to post, it is your blog, post whatever you want! I’ll read it all.. lol ^^

Well, you did post your thoughts about some dramas on the right side of your blog, however not many people saw this and they didn’t go/don’t know about KD chats to comment there and share their thoughts.

I already told on the last post why I wasn’t commenting on your soompi recaps, I did they all but did not comment since it had so many comments – and many spams – that I couldn’t keep up with, and so I prefered to come here and than you instead. I confess I was shocked you recap and finished recapping Master sun, because I know you really are scared by ghosts and these things, I’m so proud Softy! Hope your trauma goes away… I think you shouldn’t force yourself next time… take care ^^

About the dramas airing right now, I did check heirs, but it is not my taste, even my hot sexy Gumiho oppa can’t keep me. Too many characters, and I don’t see the main couple chemistry.

I tried Secret, and at first thought it was the same revenge drama that was already done… but after episode 4 I’m addicted, omg, I just want to know more and more and have so many thoughts about this and that, arrggh, I say, wait and watch it on one go, or else you’ll suffer waiting every week to watch it.

I’m also watching Medical Top team, I’m not fond of KSW too however, I like him in this drama and he is a cute doctor! You should try. I’m having fun with this drama. I did watch good doctor however I dropped it since I didn’t ship main couple…

Watching Mirae’s choice and shipping her with main hot guy. Kim Shin fighting! (But I do agree after nine, queen In Hyun’s man the time travel was a let down, it was just simple, and it shouldn’t be!)

About Potato star two words: OMG and JAILBAIT

    LOL

I mean, not trying to spoil but, YJ and HYS had a hot kiss scene. I was sooo shocked. My jaw was on the floor. I did not see it coming. Everyone was shocked.

YJ says it was his real first kiss, the actress must be feeling a pedo and thinking ”Jailbait”

I mean he has 16 and she has 23.. (She was born in the same year as me, btw it is already october 17th in Korea? Happy birthday to me! Heheheh ❤ )

You always know exactly which video to leave me so that I run over to download the episode. I still haven’t had time to watch this series yet, but I did skim through it to see all the actors on it. so many familiar faces, but it’s so weird to see them on a sitcom. The last sitcom I loved was I live in cheongdam dong so I’m so afraid that one set the bar too high. since so many of my readers love Potato star, I’m confident I will like it too. I better not fall in love or I will be tempted to recap. 🙂

    Hello Softy,
I knew you were recapping MS on Soompi… and yet I checked regularly your blog and was sad there was nothing new… and today I was so happy to see your post, well, two of them :–)
I always like reading your thoughts, you can find things and nuances I would never think of.

As for the current k-drama’s, I’am addicted to Secret and have great fun with Potato Star. I actually like the young CEO (Go Kyung Pyo, the guy from FBND who ended up with the panda editor) the most, whenever I see him, I have to laugh. He is great :–) And I may even have the second-lead syndrome…

…what brings me to my wish… if you don’t find anything worth recapping, could you perhaps consider recapping “I live in Cheongdam-dong”? There are subs only up to ep14, I think, and although I’m watching the rest without subs, I’m sure I’m missing a lot.

Anyway, I’m glad you are still around.

that is so sad to hear – only up to E14? but I can understand why it would be difficult to find subbers. it’s a total of 169 eps so that’s too much for translators to tackle. plus it would be hard to find torrrents or raw vids of it too. I did find some eps on youtube, but not every ep.
For a crazy second, I really did consider it since it’s so good, but then reality made me snap out of it. 169 eps is too much for me. I love this sitcom almost as much as OB, but the number is just too daunting.

So glad to see you are back Softy. I was worried something happened to you. And as you pointed out, it’s been only 2 weeks since MS ended. Aaahhh….because I did not watch the show and followed your live recap on soompi, it seemed like ages since I heard anything from you.

When Heirs started, I was kind of expecting you to recap because I thought you like romance and would probably get round the long long list of names to write. So I was surprised not to see any recap here.

I tried watching the drama but it’s not working for me. The funny thing is I watched a few LMH’s dramas like parts of BOF, City Hunter(love it) and Personal Taste. I knew him before I got to know Joo Won so he is like one of the few k actors whose dramas I always try to watch. I tried to watch Faith and didn’t succeed, I thought I was just seeing LMH the actor and not the character he was playing. Nonetheless, I think there were a lot of things that didn’t work for that drama with its productions woes and all. So, I anticipated his next drama, only to find out he is acting a High School chaebol heir. I really wished he took on something else so that he can challenge himself and show to viewers a different side. And you know the reason why I am spoilt in this area because another guy is doing and excelling in wholly different type of roles. So Heirs has become a show where I just want to it be over(apologies to fans) so that I can see LMH do something different. And that lipstick! It’s so distracting to say the least.

I think it’s the same for PSH. People say she cannot act, I don’t think so. Perhaps I just cannot tell much difference from the roles she has been playing so far. After a while, I think I am watching PSH as the actress and not the character.

If the story is good, LMH and PSH have the chance to make the best out of this. Hopefully they won’t be wasting their time.

Hi SS – so good to hear from you too. Sorry for staying away for so long from my blog – totally unintentional. When Joonni stopped recapping Gu, I finished it up for her cuz by then I loved the story too. Back then she wrote that she will be recapping Heirs so there was an understanding that it would be recapped on her blog. since there was no need for both of us to cover the same drama, I am more than content to park myself there each week waving imaginary pom poms cheering her on. like you said, I suck at memorizing Korean names still after 3 yrs of doing this. when I saw that cast list, I wouldn’t let Joonni back out of recapping and practically shoved her towards her computer. I promised to pinch hit for her and recap on nights she wasn’t up to it cuz I think I can handle a few eps without knowing all the names. Like I told her today, if I ever have to recap, aside from the main ones, none of those other characters are going to have names – they will be referred to as stepmom1, stepmom 2 (Tan’s mom), gf (girlfriend), cute kid, etc. Pretty sure every fan of this show is hoping and praying I wont have to step in anytime soon. 🙂

  17. ” OMG that permed hair and those clothes – it’s even worse than in photo stills now that she is actually moving around. YEH was so fashionable in her last drama so is there some kind of warped karma that says she has to suffer hair and wardrobe wise on this one?”

OMG – people are STILL going on about the fact that she opted to get in character by changing hair and wardrobe?

Criticise the script, the directing, the acting, or any combination thereof, but to trash a series simply because the character’s look is unappealing seems truly bizarre, and I say that as someone who was upset that her character’s credibility suffered because she was wearing a $45,000 watch. There are plenty of valid reasons to contemn a series, including the most important and subjective one, personal taste, but I still cannot fathom why people have such a hard time accepting that an actor may choose to make at least some gestures toward looking the way their character should.

Judging from your name, I’m going to venture a guess and say you are new here. Obviously you don’t know me or my writing style. When I read your comment I was outside. I showed it to Joonni and she explained that you had probably read so many of those comments about YEH’s hair and style so my comment was the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak and made you lose it. I’m not as magnanimous as her and can’t be that understanding. Do you feel better getting that off your chest cuz it came at my expense. I was having a perfectly nice evening when you had to put a damper on it. Why direct those comments at me when I hadn’t even watched the second ep yet? Come to think of it this post wasn’t even an impression on Mirae’s choice so why am I getting this backlash? it’s unwarranted if you ask me. Did you get lost? Did you mean to post it somewhere else – preferably on an actual recap? Couldn’t you at least have the decency to wait and attack my opinions after I write an actual one. That one paragraph was NOT even on a recap so why am I being attacked for my harmless opinion? If I was guilty of any wrongdoing, I would sit back and let you have your say, but this was unjustified. This entire post was just to inform my readers of what’s been going on and not a venue for you to vent your frustrations about an issue that really doesn’t even matter in the greater scheme of things. If you enjoy a drama – then do that. Who cares what others say or think?

To my recollection, pretty sure criticizing scripts, directing, etc (anything technical) just isn’t my thing (check any of my previous recaps and you will see – proof is there. I just dwell on characters and the story). Acting – yes I will admit I have made some negative comments about some, but not for an entire recap comment. That’s why I take offense at your accusation that I “trashed a series.” I watched that first ep literally an hour or so before I wrote those comments. That entire paragraph was just my opinion – I’m allowed to have them aren’t I since it’s my blog. Plus just to warn any fans, I prefaced that comment by saying “I’m sort of reluctant to be so brutally honest since I don’t want to affect anyone’s enjoyment” as a warning not to read on if they love the show. Did you miss that cuz you were too focused on the comment about her hair?

I don’t agree – I never “condemned or trashed a series.” I made those comments based on cursory aspects of one episode – not the entire series. Plus that’s not what I do on this blog. Ask anyone who has followed a drama with me. If anything I try to focus on the positive even when there is obviously a glaring amount of negative things to pick on. *Ok with one exception – I admit I wrote something harsh about The Fashion King finale on the side widget the night it aired, but if you watched it – pretty sure you wouldn’t hold that against me. It was an insane ending. Plus I felt so guilty about writing it so I took it down a few hours later.

I am totally with you and applaud those actors that utilize method acting by getting into character – changing their style, dress, growing facial hair, not showering, etc. I was even aware of the fact that YEH did that to her hair on purpose since later on her hair will change once her character does. Having said that, I stand by what I wrote above. I can’t help that I don’t love E1. Maybe I could if I gave it a second chance and watched E2, but now I just don’t want to anymore.

Can I just give you one parting piece of advice? Watch what you write on small personal blogs or at least don’t have that accusatory tone cuz it puts us on the defense. Unless you have your own blog, you might not know this, but some of us are fragile over here. We have a harder time dealing with criticism no matter how mature we want to believe we are. Universal truth – one bad comment always overshadows thousands of positive ones. It’s human nature. Lord knows I tried not to let them get to me and even Joonni said not to reply to you, but you got to say what you wanted so it was my turn to get this off my chest. I respect your views so I didn’t delete your comment. In return, I hope you can respect mine.

As your friend stated, my post was in part triggered by the sheer volume of comments similar to yours, but I still tried to avoid directing any animus to you personally. Guess what Nik? When Answer me 1997 came out last year, Joonni, Blue, and pretty much every blogger and kdrama fan told me to watch it so I tried and couldn’t get past the country dialect and only gave one scene a chance. Then I recapped Master’s Sun and discovered Seo In Guk so I got curious about Answer me. Now that all the torrents are gone, I recently read the recap for E1 and 2 on DB so now I am itching to watch it, but no video. I would like to think I learned my lesson from that and hopefully wont be kicking myself next year if I miss out on Mirae’s choice right now, but I still only saw the first episode and never got around to E2. I have to start watching Potato Star soon so right now my kdrama plate is full with that and Heirs.

I never cared about the perm and fashion that much for Mirae’s choice and could easily overlook it- I just wrote that cuz it was a first impression kind of thing. I think the drama you are thinking of is full house 2 – I avoided that one like the plague cuz of the odd hairstyles and bizarre story. No regrets there whatsoever about missing out. 🙂

Ah Softy, I just finished watching 4 eps of Mirae’s Choice straight and I remembered what you said about YEH’s hair.

The same thing is happening to me with Heirs. I get very distracted by the awful lipstick on LMH and Won Bin’s lips. I guess the makeup team didn’t bother to consider feedback or Korean viewers like the colour? I also got wondering why PSH didn’t change her hairstyle from FBND? I don’t think changing hairstyle will do wonders to one’s acting but it does help to rid the previous character from the viewer’s mind. I am neither fan or detractor of PSH. After I watched the first couple of eps of Heirs, I don’t agree with the critics who say she cannot act. I think she just suffers from being typecast. In this aspect, I think Jung Yong Hwa made the right decision to drop Heirs and take the role in Mirae’s Choice instead. I am also new to YH but if what critics say about his acting ability was true then I must say this man has improved by leaps and bounds.

Oh I forgot to ask if you planned to watch Good Doctor one of these days? Or did you mention you do not intend to continue from where you left off? And one more – will you watch Joo Won’s musical GHOST?

sorry for the late reply – had to look around to locate this comment again. I did download the rest of Good Doctor, but not sure when I will ever finish that drama. I watched it sporadically and just a few scenes each time. mostly the last five mins for some reason cuz that’s when I caught it on tv.
About his musical, I have to admit something – I sort of have an aversion to musicals and not sure I want to make an exception just for JW since the musical is “Ghost.” Ever since GD ended, promos for “Ghost” have been playing on almost every single video billboard in Seoul. I sort of remember the story for Ghost but never knew about the musical version, but if it sticks closely to the movie, I don’t understand why JW needs to be crying during the pottery scene when he is sitting behind her in the promo ad posters. If I am recalling correctly, the character wasn’t dead yet so why cry in that scene? it’s not a flashback to when he was alive. I think they are mainly showing that poster shot of JW crying cuz he does it so beautifully, but I really have zero interest in this story and the fact that it’s a musical makes me even more reluctant to go watch. but as his fan, I will still be rooting for it to be a huge success. 🙂

Now, it’s gone and I read somewhere that Joo Won said he would never join another variety show again. He is too harsh on himself with regards to his performance on variety.

seriously, i missed watching k-drama and i missed your comments and thoughts on a drama. i had like many blogs cuz i’m a blogworm but yours is cut above the rest because you put your heart on each post. it’s worth looking forward to. i wanted to follow MS and your livecaps but the first time i went there i got lost. after which so many things happened. i just downloaded the episodes had them waiting for me to look into my hdd. mid-October we had an earthquake, it was another traumatic experience again and fortunately our area had less damage. tho some areas were really hit hard. eventually it affected our internet connection and took almost a week to stabilized. another week or more of transferring office that leaves me with little or some no dependable connection at all. i’m just glad everything is okay now, well except my time. 😦

      about Mirae’s Choice —
i still have to watch it, i hope it would be good. 🙂

i am skimming through episodes of secret and i am liking some parts.

Heirs, i have anticipated this one but now that it’s here i have some mixed emotions about the show. basically, i am on it because of woob. i love joonni’s recaps cuz it wants me to watch the drama. aside from lmh taking up a high schooler role, i can’t understand why heirs is slated for 20 eps. i find it too slow too. although i find some scenes cute, like kim tan stalking es on sns. i want the drama to focus on impt aspects like exploring the friendship of ex-friends young do and kim tan. i am rather excited on the prospects of more eun sang and young do moments. 🙂 lols sorry but i am a kim woo bin fan. 🙂 oh and i lee bona character is really likable. 🙂

i just tried to ignore some of LMH;s outfit. 🙂 and basically i am in because of Kim Woo Bin.

i think it was GD that i last posted. haven’t watched anything at all after I hear your voice drama. just skimming through some dramas but not really watching, yet. i downloaded Mirae;s Choice and Secret and waiting to have the time to watch. i jumped to ep 8 of secret and i think it’s good, read tessieroo;s recap of ep 11-12 and i’m convinced i will watched it.

sometimes we get lost at the maze of people at soompi that;s why we connect well here at Softy’s tho i never forget to mention you at a forum we are in at soompi and you also do the same. 🙂

I heard many good things about Woo Bin, I got a glimpse of his charm in the little I have seen of him in Heirs. I guess like Choi Jin Hyuk who I adored in GFB, I hope to see these two men in their next dramas.

Oh, was it GD that you last post on soompi? Guess you must have dropped the show. I am in charge of that thread so I wouldn’t have missed you if you had stayed around. Yup, soompi posts can run like fire, it’s easy to get lost 😀

Gonna to start on Secret between RL and fan projects for Joo Won.

oh SS i would really recommend for you to watch School 2013 or if you are up to something darker, White Christmas. Woob is such an awesome actor. of course, JW is still my number 1. 🙂

When I watched the first episodes of Heirs, I noticed that Woob had the kind of magnetism in his acting. It’s not his looks but his acting. I did watched White Christmas and yeah, he made an impression there. I tried School but I dropped it. That’s the one with LJS and Woob, right? Geez….my wish is for Joo Won and LJS in a drama together.

I am trying Secret now but getting kind of impatient. Maybe I should take the cue from you and jump to ep 8.

Sorreeee nonski chingu. By the way, are you and your family all right? So sad to hear that the typhoon took so many lives and caused so much damage.

Thanks for your recommendations. Reminds me of my friend who wants me to watch Master’s Sun very badly and I wanted her to watch Good Doctor. We both watched 1 ep of each other’s favourite so it’s a stalemate 😀 Maybe one day I will tell her we will watch them concurrently, haha. It’s always nice to spazz on the same drama, isn’t it?

Hi Nonski!! Miss you too, I saw your comment at joonni and I didn’t found it later to reply you because I got lost lol sorry!!

An earthquake? Omg I hope you and everyone is alright. I’m skipping through Mirae’s choice but not really hooked into it, tried Heirs but it was slow for my taste and I can’t deal with so much bullying and so many mean characters – plus PSH cries everytime giving me Tree of heaven vibes… but Softy and Joonni recaps/ thoughs keep making me check it out lol

I’m watching and loving Answer 1994, you should try! There isn’t jerk main guy or jerk second guy there, everyone is likeable and even the supportive characters have their own screen time to shine, it can be a bit slow to some people but I enjoy it so much, the nostalgia is good!!

        Kisses 😉

hello iviih so sorry for the super late reply… it had seem become a cliche but so many things happened. after that devastating earthquake, our area was hit by a very strong typhoon. fortunately we were not affected but it took away so many lives in other parts of the country. i’ve been busy since then, with office work and we also did some outreach to those affected. internet was affected too. 😦

thank you so much for the concern. me and my family are okay tho. 🙂

i just started saving softy’s recap so i can read them on mobile. i just started watching You From The Stars and I hope you are watching too. 🙂
